Guadalajara boxing hope becomes ‘Golden Boy’

Guadalajara’s young red-headed boxing phenomenon Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is now a Golden Boy after signing for former world champion Oscar de la Hoya’s promotional outfit.

De la Hoya traveled to Guadalajara to unveil 19-year-old Alvarez as the latest acquisition to his elite stable of boxers – Golden Boy Promotions, based in Los Angeles, California.

“This is a very important moment for boxing and for Golden Boy Promotions for having reached a promotional agreement with Saul Alvarez,” Mexican-American De la Hoya told the Guadalajara press. “Saul is already an idol in Mexico because he has natural talent combined with his charismatic personality, and that is what is going to bring us success at international level.”

Since Alvarez turned professional four years ago, he has a record of 30 victories with just one draw. He is currently seen as Mexico’s premier young boxing talent.

“I’m very happy to be another member of a company like Golden Boy,” said Alvarez. “I want them to know that I will do everything possible to become champion of the world and to make people proud of me, as much inside the ring as outside.”

Just last week rumors were rife that Alvarez was about to sign a deal to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. but advisors believed the bout, against an experienced boxer who is arguably the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, came too soon for the current Youth WBC Welterweight champion.

Nevertheless, big things are being talked about for Alvarez in 2010, including a shot at the world title. His name is even being banded around for a major boxing event at the 105,000-capacity Estadio Azteca in Mexico City to coincide with Mexico’s bicentennial celebrations.

With De la Hoya now in the driving seat, it is surely only a matter of time before the proud Tapatio takes to the ring against a major name in boxing. At just 19 years of age and with Golden Boy at his side, time is on Canelo’s side.

Alvarez’ next fight is in Chiapas on March 6 against an as yet unannounced opponent.
