Guadalajara golfer Lorena Ochoa finished second in the final LPGA Tour event of the year to win her fourth consecutive Rolex Player of the Year award, edging out South Korea’s Jiyai Shin by a single point.
In the final round of the McDonald’s LPGA Championship at the Houstonian Golf and Country Club in Houston, Texas, Ochoa shot a five-under-par 67 in a tournament shortened by rain to three rounds to trail winner Anna Nordqvist of Sweden by two strokes.
After some patchy mid-season form, Ochoa finished the year strongly to record ten top-ten finishes and three victories in her 22 starts. Although she only finished fourth in the official money list with 1,489,395 dollars in earnings, Ochoa maintained her world number one position with some ease.
“It’s not about breaking records,” Ochoa said after her round “I want to stay at the top as long as I continue playing, so this is just a great year for me.”
Ochoa, 28, returns to Guadalajara to prepare for her wedding next month to Aeromexico executive Andres Conesa Labastida, a divorcee who is 13 years older than his fiancee.
