For years I have begged relatives in Europe not to send Christmas or birthday presents to me or my family by mail. If you must, wire the money and I’ll buy the gifts, I have said, after some early experiences left a bitter taste in the mouth. Better still, never send anything by regular mail – in all truthfulness, half the time parcels fail to arrive at all.
This year, however, my brother’s girlfriend decided to send some small but simple birthday and Christmas gifts to my wife and daughter in a single DHL package. When I received an email from my brother advising me that he had already dispatched the parcel, I feared I might have to pay an extra charge.
What I didn’t expect was how much I would have to pay.
