Déjà vu

Dear Sir,

Reading Erik Slebos letter last week was a case of déjà vu.

It seems Mexican customs has not changed at all. I arrived four years ago, all the necessary papers in order, all fees paid to the door. It took just a few days short of two months to get the furnishings released and delivered. This was after paying ransom twice, pleading for delivery and finally threatening to write to the newspapers. Delivery was on New Year’s Eve at 6 p.m. and was off-loaded by my neighbor and his extended family. Only that was not the end of it. It took three days to pull all the slivers from a mattress that had previously been sealed in clear plastic. Every box had been opened and their contents upturned or scattered, some things broken, many marked. To this day I am reminded of this smart-ass’ way of introducing foreigners to a new country. Someone had used a sharp object to make a back-and-forth Z mark on anything plastic, wood or metal but this person was definitely not Zorro! There was no way of proving that a Customs official did this, but some of those marked items had been well packed and nobody else had any reason to open them.

One of those items was sitting in front of me as I read Erik’s letter. It still disgusts me that anyone would do such a thing to another person’s belongings. If this is still happening, it’s time the government did a follow up to ensure all personal furnishings arrive at the door in reasonable condition.
