CHAPALA - Lake Chapala’s north shore beaches are safe for recreational use during the upcoming Easter holidays, according to Dr. Todd Stong, a U.S.-licensed civil engineer who has spearheaded independent water quality testing in the area.

A U.S. - licensed engineer says independent tests of Lake Chapala’s water quality indicate that beach areas in Chapala, San Antonio Tlayacapan, Ajijic, San Juan Cosala and Jocotepec are currently safe for swimming and other recreational uses.

Two sets of analyses were conducted on water samples from different points along the shore on March 3 and March 10. The samples were evaluated to determine whether the water meets international standards for recreational use, including swimming. These are the first such tests conducted in more than a year.

Results showed acceptable conditions at beach areas in Chapala, San Antonio Tlayacapan, Ajijic, San Juan Cosala and Jocotepec.

Findings on samples drawn near San Pedro Tesistan and Tuxcueca are inconclusive at this time. Stong indicates that further testing will be required to verify whether or not it is safe for people to bathe at those sites.

As a part-time resident of the area, Stong has donated his time and expertise over the past seven years to various projects to improve water quality and public services in Lakeside communities. He works independently and as a volunteer advisor to local governments. He has also appeared frequently as a guest speaker at local organizations to share his knowledge on regional problems and discuss recommended solutions with English-speaking residents.
