‘La Petatera’: Colima’s most unique festival

Share

For the past 153 years, the Petatera, a portable plaza de toros (bullring) has been erected in Villa de Alvarez, Colima for the municipality’s annual Fiestas de San Felipe de Jesus. It takes two months to erect the unique structure, which is made solely of sticks, wooden posts, rope and petate, a material woven from the fibers of the palm of petate, from which the name of the festival “Petatera” originated.  The construction technique used dates back to the pre-Hispanic era. In 2007, on completing its 150th anniversary, the Petatera was declared a national cultural heritage site.
