A hurricane warning has been issued along Mexico’s Pacific Coast, with Manzanillo predicted to suffer the worst effects.
Tropical Storm Andres is the first named storm of the season and is currently moving up the Guerrero and Michoacan coastline. The heavy weather system is likely to pass along the Jalisco coastline sometime on Tuesday or Wednesday.
A hurricane warning has been put out from Lazaro Cardenas in south Michoacan to Cabo Corrientes, just south of Puerto Vallarta.
The storm is likely to become a small hurricane, says Angel Meulenert, director of the Institute of Astronomy and Meterology at the Universidad de Guadalajara.
“The worst affected area will be Manzanillo because the path of the storm is expected to pass very close to the coast,” Meulenert told the Reporter. “Rain is going to be the biggest feature of the system. A lot will fall.”
Added the director: “Low lying areas are particularly susceptible to flooding and precautions should be taken. Also people should be careful driving along the highway from Manzanillo to Puerto Vallarta as it is very close to the ocean on one side and mountains on the other.”
The National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida says Andres currently has winds of 50 mph (85 kmh) but will strengthen as the storm moves northwards.
The Guadalajara and Lake Chapala areas are also expected to receive a lot of rain in the coming days as a result of the Pacific storm, according to Meulenert.
Meulenert said the storm signals the start of the rainy season in Jalisco. He believes that due to the effect of El Niño, rains shouldn’t be as severe this year as last and should only last until some time in August.
