Born November 28, 1940, in Keansburg, New Jersey, Johnson attended Rutgers University and left school after two years to start a trucking company, TJJ Trucking, in Keansburg that he still owned at the time of his death. He joined the police department of Hazlet, New Jersey, retiring with the rank of captain in 1995. He was a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Academy in Quantico, Virginia, and served as the volunteer fire chief for Hazlet for many years.
He married his wife, Wendy, in 1985 and they worked together in his construction business until they moved to the Lake Chapala area in 1995.
Johnson was a member of the Little Chapel by the Lake, where he served as a trustee and Chairman of Missions. He served for several years with the Ajijic Chili Cookoff as the site planner. He volunteered to work on improvements at the Mision San Pablo children’s shelter and the Johnsons headed up a feeding program for the village of San Juan Tecomitlan. Along with other volunteers, he installed six new bathrooms in the village.
Johnson was always quick to help and capable of fixing anything, stepping up multiple times to aid friends and the needy.
He is survived by his wife, Wendy, a son, Thomas Johnson of Hazlet, New Jersey, daughters Cindy and Tricia, also of Hazlet, a stepson, Christian Placanica, of Howell, New Jersey and stepdaughter Desiree Darlyn of Westchester, New York. He had eight grandchildren and four step-grandchildren. His daughter Cheryl predeceased him.
Johnson was known to be a friend to all and a loving and affectionate husband.
