Longtime Lakeside resident Walter J. Apley died in a hospital in Portland, Oregon November 9, 2009 at the age of 90. Born February 2, 1919 in Portland, Apley graduated from Franklin High School. After completing three years at Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon, he entered the United States Air Corps in 1941 and was commissioned as an officer. He served as a navigator in the African and European theaters in World War II and was honorably discharged as a major in 1945. In 1946, Apley returned to Portland and entered Willamette Law School, graduating and passing the Oregon State Bar in 1949.

He first practiced law in Milwaukee as a partner in the firm Charack and Apley before becoming deputy district attorney in Oregon City. He began his career as deputy attorney general with the Oregon State Tax Commission in Salem until his retirement.

Apley married Kay Mallory in 1946 and they had four children. After a divorce, he married Ava Mallory in 1968 and the couple retired to Ajijic, Mexico in 1991. His wife predeceased him in 2003. Apley was an avid bridge player and traveled to Cuba, Italy and Russia while living in Ajijic.

Apley traveled to Portland last June to regain his health and planned to return to Lakeside. He wasn’t able to do that.

Apley is survived by daughter Betsy Bailarin, daughter-in-law Gail Apley, son-in-law Rob Smith and stepdaughter Pat Fowler. He had four grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.

The family suggests that contributions in Apley’s memory be made to the charity of one’s choice.
