Former Lakeside resident Andrea “Anne” Whitney died from a stroke January 25 in Portland, Oregon at the age of 82.

Born September 12, 1927 in Hollywood, California, Whitney grew up on the west coast and developed an intense love of the sea. She trained in the art of oil painting in Italy. Later, she studied the science of sailboat navigation and realized her dream of becoming a successful marine artist. Based in New York City, she enjoyed yacht races, expeditions to the Mediterranean, the South Pacific and remote areas of the Amazon and Australia.

Whitney moved to the Lake Chapala area in 1998 and lived in Ajijic for about ten years. Her many friends in Ajijic remember her as someone who lived life to the fullest and was always quick to help her friends. She was frequently seen walking around the village with a big smile underneath her signature pith helmet.

She is survived by her children Judy Strauss, Jeff Snoyer and Janet Snoyer; a brother, Donovan Jacobs and sister Caroline Jacobs; six grandchildren and her two beloved, wirehaired dachshunds, Risa and Max, all of the United States.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Her friend, Pamela Steed, said of her: “This little corner of the planet will be a lot quieter without her laughter and her ability to energize everything.”
