Kenneth Alan Hertz of Ixtlahuacan died unexpectedly on December 23 at the age of 54. Born November 1, 1955 in University City, Missouri, Hertz attended Skyline High School in Dallas, Texas, and the University of Texas at Austin. He lived most of his adult life in Houston, Texas, where he was employed by the Houston Health Department for 16 years. Prior to that, he was an assistant to a Houston City Council Member and an administrative aide for the Harris County Democratic Party. Before living in Houston, he resided in Dallas, Texas and San Diego, California.

Hertz and his life partner Jon Nix met in October 1978 and shared their lives for more than 31 years.

He retired from his position as an administrative manager in the City of Houston Health Department in early 2006 and moved to Agua Escondida in Ixtlahuacan. He pursued a variety of personal interests after his retirement, but recently had begun to concentrate on his work as a professional photographer, a pursuit in which he had had a lifelong interest. He photographed many weddings and other events, and had produced a large body of work. He was an active member of the Ajijic Society of the Arts and had participated in their recent exhibitions.

Hertz is survived by his life partner; his father, Howard Hertz of Las Vegas, Nevada; a sister, Susan Cook of Ft. Worth, Texas, and his nephews Ben, Cooper and Chase Cook, all of Midlothian, Texas.

Ken and his infectious grin will be missed by all who knew him.

A celebration of his life is planned for April.
