Richard Alan Slater died on January 2 in a Lakeside rest home from cardiopulmonary failure and complications of diabetes. He was 69. He expired peacefully with caring friends and dedicated caregivers close to his bedside in his final hours.
Slater was born on March 6, 1940 in Orange County, California. After retirement from the food industry, he moved to Mexico in 2003, taking up residence first in Guadalajara before settling permanently in the Lake Chapala area about four years ago.
Slater’s experiences with low cost Mexico retirement living were featured in “Seniors head to Mexico for cheaper nursing,” a 2007 news article published in the Arizona Republic and USA Today.
Local acquaintances remember him for his keen sense of humor, crusty character, affection for canine pets and, despite failing health in the last year of his life, an abiding fondness for good times and good food, especially fettuccine.
Single and an only child, he is survived by a cousin Ron Clark and several other distant relatives in the United States.
Due to the precarious financial circumstances he faced in recent months, Slater left behind unpaid bills for medical care and funeral services. To cover those expenses, a support group is planning several fundraising events.
An estate sale organized by the Chapala Consignment Shoppe will be held February 5, 6 and 7, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Calle Guerrero 108, with all proceeds destined for the cause. For information on donating items call 765-6500.
In addition, a benefit cookout dinner in Slater’s memory is scheduled for Friday, February 19, 2 p.m., at Chapala’s American Legion Post Seven headquarters, Calle Morelos 114. For ticket information call Janie Carruth, Tel. 765-6314.
