Ajijic resident Bonnie Silverstein died on December 27 after a long battle with breast cancer. She was 66.

Born May 29, 1942 in Boston, Massachusetts, Silverstein graduated from Chelsea High School in 1960 and from Russell Sage College in New York in 1964, with a Bachelor of Science degree. She traveled in Western Europe and Greece from 1966 to 1969, before returning to Philadelphia.

Silverstein worked as a stringer for the Philadelphia Inquirer from 1972 to 1980 and specialized in writing travel and food articles.

She was the co-owner of a crafts, clothing and jewelry store from 1985 to 2000 and traveled around the world buying exotic hand-crafted articles to sell in the Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia. She taught English as a Second Language in Philadelphia from 2000 to 2002.

Silverstein traveled to Ajijic in 2002 and 2004 and bought a home in Ajijic in February 2005. She was an avid Yoga student and active with the Green Thumbs group working in the Lake Chapala Society gardens.

She is survived by her husband, Walter Bowker of Ajijic, a sister, Shelia Fleischer, nephew Howard Fleischer and a niece, Melody Spence.
