Think of Denmark and what springs to mind? Vikings, Hans Christian Andersen, perhaps Lego or Carlsberg? Less well known, but a source of much pride for Danes, is their tradition for cutting-edge design and craftsmanship
“The story goes that in the 1700s, the Danish king looked over his shoulder at the French and British designs and said to his craftsmen, ‘If you can’t do it as well then I won’t buy,’” explains ex-carpenter Morten Winther.
Fast forward to the 21st century and Denmark enshrines the status of the craft designer to this day, says Winther.
In Guadalajara, Danish design has its niche, thanks to the work of Brian Bielenberg Sorensen, who nine years ago opened Nordika: an up market studio shop near Guadalajara’s famous Minerva statue selling exclusively Danish-made and -designed goods from furniture to home accessories, under the motto: Scandinavian design for Mexican people.
