You wouldn’t normally associate Mexico with producing wine but the domestic wine industry is intriguing and growing according to those in the know. And, in the heart of tequila country, Tapatios seem to be sitting up and taking notice.

Guadalajara is home to a respectable number of vegetarian restaurants. Most of them are located in or near the “Zona Rosa” (which roughly includes Centro Magno, the U.S. Consulate, and a University of Guadalajara campus) with its plethora of street life, schools, cultural centers, foreigners and those perennial fans of vegetarianism -- young people.

British-born Diana Kennedy, the queen of Mexican cuisine, visited Lakeside last week for a reception at the Lomas de Ajijic clubhouse, where she presented her new book, “Oaxaca, al gusto.”

With the start of Lent last week feasting on fish is now the seasonal fad.
