Helping the turtles
Since 2004, a group of artists and their friends have put on the annual Arts for the Turtles fund-raiser. This year’s event takes place Thursday, February 25 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Bahia del Sol and Ocean Terrace.
Proceeds support the work of AMA Mexico, a non-profit organization that focuses on sea turtle preservation and supports the Nuevo Vallarta Sea Turtle Preserve – the largest of its kind in the state of Nayarit.
In past years, funds raised have helped with the salaries of the preserve’s resident marine biologists and student interns, the construction of incubation corrals and information centers and the development and dissemination of educational materials in Nayarit.
In 2009, Arts for the Turtles sponsored a University of California research project on the impact of tourism on the nesting habitat of sea turtles in Nuevo Vallarta. A special booth this year will feature this research, along with information on the Olive Ridley and Leatherback sea turtles that nest on the shores of Banderas Bay.
On sale at Arts for the Turtles will be original paintings, cards, jewelry, textile arts, metal art and T-shirts featuring the Turtle Preserve. The table selling homemade goodies from Bahia del Sol’s gourmet bakers is always one of the most popular.
The day will also include a flea market and a silent auction. A raffle of quilt art by Karen is an added feature, as is a live auction of donations from turtle lovers from local communities.
The event will be supported by the “Turtleheads” – volunteers who give turtle talks to visitors prior to hatchling releases at the preserve.
Bahia del Sol and Ocean Terrace are located about half-a-mile north of Paradise Village, at Paseo Cocoteros and Retorno Cozumel in Nuevo Vallarta. For more information, contact Karen Guthrie, 322-297-1545.
