North Banderas Beat - January 16, 2010

New police cars

The municipal police in Bahia de Banderas have received a Christmas present from the federal government: 16 Toyota Highlander crossover SUVs and three-crew cab pickup trucks.

Municipal police officers also received new uniforms, radios and bullet-proof vests. Each of the new Highlanders will be assigned to patrol a specific area of the municipality. The plan is that the patrol will not have to leave the area to report to police headquarters at shift change or to buy gasoline.

Mayor Hector Paniagua says the vehicles being replaced will be sold to help pay for new police equipment.

Northshore BBQ expansion

Hey BBQ fans, remember the No Name Cafe in Vallarta where you could dine and watch the boats in the bay and the foot traffic on the Puerto Vallarta malecon?

Well, no malecon now, but ribs were what No Name was known for, and at the new place in Nuevo Vallarta, it’s been reported, ribs are what you get. And there is a dining terrace from which you can watch the traffic on the boulevard.

After an absence of several years, the café has relocated to Riviera Nayarit just down the street from Paradise Village Mall.

Bucerias resident Ross Cable, who says he can really pack the food in, reports he and another rib-loving friend couldn’t finish the full rack of ribs brought to the table and had to ask for to-go boxes to take the leftovers home with them.

Another notable: a very thick pork chop which comes in three varieties. Also on the sports bar-style menu are burgers, steaks and seafood. In the Starter menu section, there’s a fried onion loaf, which is unusual to see around here.

Their “All Day Breakfast” consists of hamburger steak and eggs, hash browns and toast. No Name Café is open every day of the week from 9 a.m. to midnight.

Another well-known name in ribs (and also tortilla soup) moving or expanding in the area is Vallarta’s Ernesto’s Good Grub.

Ernesto’s Jarretaderas, just across the bridge into Nayarit, was in business for less than a year when it was forced to close for about six months, thanks to road construction. It’s once again serving what many say are the best ribs (and the best tortilla soup, a meal in a bowl in three sizes) in the Vallarta area. Their all-you-can-eat rib offering is on Saturday.

Ernesto’s #3 has just opened in La Cruz, with the same menu and same recipes as the other two. Their all-you-can-eat rib special is on Friday.

Local Ernesto’s are open 1 to 10 p.m. Jarretaderas is closed on Sunday.

The “newcomer” in the local BBQ game is WeBe Loco Bar and Grill, formerly WeBe Sausage in Bucerias, has announced they will be open daily at 11 a.m., serving brunch until 2 p.m., then “afternoon appies” followed by dinner from 6 p.m. WeBe Loco’s specialty is Texas-style smoked meats including ribs, beef and polish sausage.

Amigos de Bucerias

President John Ozzello, Vice President Christie Forget and Treasurer Dick Pickup were reelected for 12-month terms at the 2010 annual meeting of Amigos de Bucerias. Newly elected was Valiene Heckart as secretary, replacing Gail Runkles, who is moving back to the United States.

For the first time in the short history of the organization, there were two candidates for one of the officer positions, with Ross Cable challenging Ozzello for president.

Santa Report

The report is in from the North Pole – Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus, aka Ron and Arlene Tackett of Bucerias and their many helpers, handed out just under 1,200 toys to children in Bucerias on Christmas Eve.  Their 16th annual “Christmas for Bucerias Children” just keeps getting better each year. “Thumbs up” to the Tackett’s for keeping the tradition alive for so many years!

Good taste

The January 20-22 First Annual Taste of Riviera Nayarit and Bucerias Chalk Art Walk will combine great food and great art.

Serving up tasty bites and street side specialties will be popular area restaurants Riviera Grill, Ernestos Good Grub, Friscatti/Bistro Deli, Xocolat, Eva’s Brickhouse, El Oasis Sports Bar, Adriatico, Todo Verde, Shamrock Pub, Pie In The Sky Bakery, Cafe Paraiso, Philo’s, Blue Bay and Posada Bucerias, along with caterers My Mexican Kitchen and Alfredo.

Meanwhile, chalk artists from around the world will draw amazing renditions directly on Calle Lazaro Cardenas, which will be closed to traffic for the event.

The theme this year, Out of the Pacific, will be an opportunity for the artists to use the bright colors found in the pacific wildlife and fauna. Featured are Lori Escalera  (www.thestreetpainter.com and www.youtube.com/loriescalera), Lorelle Miller, Julio Jiminez and Antonio Collantes.

There will be an area for spectators to demonstrate their own skills at chalk drawing, with chalk and aprons available for purchase.

In chalk art workshops on Friday, January 22, some 20 children will create a large mural and local professional artists will be given pastels and chalks and be taught techniques such as trompe l’oeil (the art of blending chalk).

Patrons from the U.S., Canada and Mexico, as well as companies such as BestofBucerias.com, have purchased the chalk and will be sponsoring these workshops.

The price range for each food tasting will be between 10 and 30 pesos. Water and soft drinks will available for purchase and a beer garden on hand nearby.

An Awards Cocktail Party and reception take place at Adriatico on Friday at 5 p.m. Tickets are available for 300 pesos and include two cocktails with wonderful appetizers.

The cocktail party will also feature a discussion by Lori Escalera on the history of what is known as the Art of Madonnari and how these festivals can boost the economy in towns such as Bucerias.
