Wal-Mart moves ahead
Despite a souring economy in the United States and Mexico, the Wal-Mart Plaza project on Highway 200 near Nuevo Vallarta is finally taking shape.
Fears that the project had been put on hold eased after crews started pouring concrete footings and erecting steel support beams.
In addition to the Wal-Mart, a multi-screen cinema, restaurants and stores are planned for the site.
Merkabastos
The first stone has been turned and contracts have been signed for construction to start on the Merkabastos wholesale marketplace just outside Bucerias, reports Oscar Valenzuela, general manager of MK Bahia, the project’s development company.
Merkabastos will offer food items and beverages, in both wholesale and less-than-wholesale quantities and prices, to restaurants, hotels, food distribution companies, supermarkets and retail customers.
At the Merkabastos, you will find areas selling fruits, vegetables, meats, fish and shellfish, eggs, dry products as well as food prep, special cooking, frozen and wine cellar items, in a modern setting, featuring many locally-produced products.
Construction is expected to begin immediately, and completion of the first phase – a 3,000-square-meter building on Highway 200 across from the Flamingos Golf Club – is scheduled for August.
According to Valenzuela, the project will cost around 100 million pesos, create 200 to 250 direct jobs and take two years to complete.
“Indirectly, employment will also affect local farmers, cattle ranchers and fishermen throughout Nayarit,” he added.
Champagne reception
The second in a series of four champagne receptions for artists visiting the Puerto Vallarta area takes place at the Bucerias Art Walk Plaza on Thursday, March 12, 7-9 p.m. (Jalisco time).
The reception is free and open to the public, and will showcase abstract artist Antonio Collantes. Originally from Guadalajara, Collantes has studied extensively in Puebla, Mexico City and Guadalajara and is known as the innovator of “pixel art,” according to Christy Beguesse, Bucerias Art Walk founder and the owner of A Broken Art Studio.
Says Beguesse: “Welcoming Antonio to Bucerias is one of the real success stories of the Bucerias Art Walk. I will never forget when this young kid came through the door of my gallery and asked to participate in the art walk. When I saw his work I was blown away.”
Since that day, Beguesse says, Collantes has taken up residence at the Bucerias Art Walk Plaza and can be seen painting almost daily under the palm trees and offering workshops in acrylics, watercolors or oils. You can view some of Collantes’s work at artmajeur.com/homokosmikus.

The Bucerias Art Walk Plaza is located at Lazaro Cardenas 62.
The next Bucerias Art Walk will be on March 19 and the last art walk for the season will be on April 2.
El Surtidor opens
The latest El Surtidor store has opened on Highway 200, near the Pemex gas station on the southern edge of Bucerias. El Surtidor is a Mexican company which sells everything you need for the kitchen (except major appliances) and bathroom. You’ll find sinks, toilets, faucets, water heaters, kitchen and bath accessories, tile-working tools, plumbing parts and supplies and tile, tile and more tile.

According to the manager of the new store, Victor Manuel Andrade, this is the largest branch in the 20-store Guadalajara Division. The store will have ten employees.
Andrade said he will be creating a file of installers and repair persons to provide “full service” to his customers.
The store currently sits on a dirt road and the path to the entrance is circuitous. Andrade is waiting for the municipality to make a curb-cut from the highway in front of the store.
El Surtidor’s hours are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Blood donations
There is a continual blood shortage in the Banderas Bay area. Please consider participating in an upcoming blood drive scheduled March 11, at Los Mangos Library in Bucerias from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. All donors will receive a card, which, should the need ever arise, entitle them to one unit of blood for each unit they have donated at no charge.
