Members are quick to point out that they now host the biggest chili and salsa cookoff held on the coast between Puerto Vallarta and, perhaps, Acapulco.
The old folks home in Cihuatlan needed a new washing machine, so the Rotary Club bought one and had it installed. The club also helped arrange an upgrade of elements in the facility - they had no fire extinguishers, for example - that inspectors had found to be deficient.
The Rotary Club was diligent in making sure that all donations from visiting northerners were used appropriately.
The club engaged much "clearing house" activity after it was discovered that every school requesting aid wanted a computer printer. Simply by spreading the word, Rotarians were able to connect three schools with three used printers. Another school in the small pueblo of Lazaro Cardenas received a much-needed DVD player and a donation of two ceiling fans from visiting Rotarians.
The Centro de Salud (health center) in Melaque came up with a long list of needs. The club gave them a battery and a bunch of skin patches.
The club also made another donation to the Ballet Folklorico Xalisco, a dance troupe of more than 60 children that meets three times a week. Not only do the kids perform folk dances from all over Mexico, but organizers of the troupe stress punctuality, respect, politeness and the importance of getting good grades. Most families cannot afford to buy the costumes needed. The dance troupe is forced to finance its "costume closet" from food and drink sales.
The Costalegre Rotary Club meets every Wednesday morning at Rooster's in Melaque at 9 a.m.
