Learning

The next Lake Chapala Society (LCS) Learning Seminar will be on Tuesday, February 2, noon, in the Sala. Bob Miller will introduce, via an Internet podcast, author and tech expert Kevin Kelly, who will consider the next 5,000 days on the Internet. He finds that the Internet is about 5,000 days old and ruminates about what we can predict about the next 5,000 days of the World Wide Web. Kelly has been the publisher of the “Whole Earth Review,” executive editor of “Wired” and author of books and articles on biology, business and computer communication. All LCS members are invited to come see and hear this presentation and exercise their minds in the discussion that follows.

Fraccs meet

The Lakeside Association of Fraccionamientos and Condos (LAFC) will meet on Thursday, February 11, 10 a.m. at the Chapala Country Club. The Lakeside Life Planning will give a presentation. Newly installed Chapala Mayor Jesus Cabrera will speak to the group on March 11. The Country Club has agreed to allow participants to eat lunch there after the meetings. The food is excellent and the prices very reasonable.

LAFC is a group made up of board members of fraccionamientos and condominiums at Lakeside. There are no dues and the association has no budget. Members gather to listen to a speaker and discuss mutual problems and possible solutions in a very informal and informative manner.

The ranch

The Spay and Neuter Center‘s “ranch,” where many wonderful dogs are sheltered, holds an open house on Sunday, January 31, 12:30 p.m.

Besides enjoying the beautiful countryside and the great chili and drinks, you’ll have the opportunity to learn more about what Spay and Neuter is all about. You’ll even have the chance to walk a dog or two, if you wish.

The chili is being cooked up by different folks, who are making a contest out of it. The public will get to vote for their favorite. Meanwhile, volunteers will be on hand to answer any questions and tell you each dog’s story.

Join Spay and Neuter for a fun afternoon with your canine friends.

To reach “the ranch,” take the Chapala-Guadalajara highway to the “retorno” at Chapala Haciendas. Turn back toward Chapala and take the first road to the right after passing Las Brisas. The road is graveled. Look for the signs.

Presbyterians

Pastor Ray DeLange of Lakeside Presbyterian Church will continue his series based on the Sermon on the Mount. The sermon title for January 31 is “Cool, Calm and Collected.” Services begin at 10 a.m. at Carretera Chapala-Jocotepec 231A in Riberas del Pilar (near S&S Auto).

Unitarians

The service for January 31 at the Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will be “Spirituality: What is It?” The fellowship meets Sundays, 10:30 a.m. at the Lake Chapala Jewish Congregation, Santa Margarita 113 in Riberas del Pilar (behind Mateo’s).

During the January 12 meeting of the Ajijic Rotary Club, Alex Sgroi – not only a Rotarian but also a chef – presented Bob Salvatore, president of the Rotary Club of Ajijic, with a 1,000-dollar check from Sgroi’s home club of Centre Wellington (Toronto). Sgroi said he would bring down a check from his club on a yearly basis for the Rotary Club of Ajijic’s Scholarship Fund for needy local students.

Happy birthday

Members of Air Force Association of Canada 904 Wing and friends gathered last week, hosted by Ceri Dando, to celebrate the 90th birthday of Lakesider Charles Morgan.

Morgan joined the Royal Air Force in June 1937 and served in various assignments, as an armorer and later becoming an instructor. He was seconded to the Fleet Air Arm before being demobilized in 1946.

Morgan is a member of the 904 Wing and The Lakeside British Society.

Fashion show

Mark your calendars for the annual Cruz Roja Fashion Show being held this year on Friday, March 19 at the Hotel Real de Chapala in La Floresta. The fundraiser will include a platinum level of seating and service that includes all drinks, special botanas (snacks) and concierge service. Tickets for the platinum service go on sale February 9 through February 13 and cost 600 pesos for each seat at a table for ten. Get your friends together, reserve your favorite table and get set to have a terrific afternoon. Other tickets (450 pesos each for reserved and 400 pesos each for unreserved seating) will go on sale February 15.

Event planner Cece Girling promises that this show will be the best ever. Don’t miss it!

Bus trip

The Cruz Roja volunteers still have tickets available for their bus trip to Tlaquepaque on Tuesday, February 23. Departure is at 9 a.m. from Auditorio de la Ribera del Lago in La Floresta to return at 4 p.m. Tickets are 150 pesos and can be purchased at the Cruz Roja table at the Lake Chapala Society or by calling June Cooper at 766-4939.

Yard sale

Don’t forget about the yard sale held each month by the Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Post 7 at Morelos 114 in Chapala. The next one is Friday, February 5, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Be there to check out all the bargains and have breakfast.

Those who would like to reserve vending space should call Susan English at 765-3303.

Super Bowl

It’s a great place to kick back and enjoy the Super Bowl, Sunday, February 7 (kick-off at 5:28 p.m., Lakeside time), live from Dolphin Stadium in Miami, on the 42-inch wide-screen TV at American Legion Post 7. Besides great football, grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, chili and desserts will be ready for consumption and special bar prices will be in effect. No advance notice or ticket purchases are necessary.

Texans

The Lone Star Club invites everyone to join them on the last Thursday of each month, 3 p.m. for a social gathering at American Legion Post 7. You don’t have to be from Texas. You just have to like Texas, been through Texas, shop in Texas or think about Texas.

Bring botanas to share, get ready for a Texas trivia quiz and just have fun.

Many thanks

Libby Townsend, founder of the Tarahumara blanket project, is thrilled with the wonderful response to the recent benefit held at La Bodega Restaurant. She was overwhelmed with the amazing crowd of folks who showed up. Some were old friends; but many more were new friends and they were all very generous.

Special thanks go to Javier and Martha Gonzalez, owners of La Bodega, for their hospitality, to Nanette and Antonio Enciso, Daniel Cordero and Joel Barker, for providing great music, Jackie Kellum for her work vending the Tarahumara artesania, and artists Laura Hobson and Jose Melendrez.

According to Townsend, she couldn’t make the whole thing happen without the generous, patient and understanding folks who support the project.

The warm blankets, sweaters, coats and medicines are being delivered to the indigenous Tarahumara of Copper Canyon, operating under the umbrella of the Complejo Asistencial Clinica Santa Teresita, A.C. on Saturday, January 30.

Yarn

Since the knitters of Needlepushers have produced and given away more than 100 sweaters to the needy in the last two months, they are in need of more yarn to continue their good work. If you have unused yarn lying around the house left over from the last project you didn’t finish, and would like to donate it to these fine women, please call me at 766-1167 and I’ll see to it that it goes to Needlepushers.
