A special Christmas Eve event on Thursday, December 24 is set for 3 p.m. A Christmas Cabaret featuring Sydney Gay and her puppets presents a humorous, Christian adult message. Seating is limited to 100 people and the doors will close promptly at 3 p.m.

Paul Fisher will speak on “The past, the future and the present” on December 27 at the regular service.

The service on January 3 will include Communion and will be preached by Reverend Steve Robertson.

Earth bags

Jay White from Texas auctioned off the “Earth Bags” handpainted by eight local expatriate artists at Roberto’s Restaurant in Ajijic. Modeled by Virginia Balon, the sales raised 10,000 pesos for the ACA organic farm, once all the expenses for the event were paid. Arranged by the mother-daughter combo of Kem Spaulding and Lois Schroff, the event drew 40 people. Both wish to thank all who participated.

Unitarians

The service for December 20 at the Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will be “A U.U. Christmas.” The Fellowship meets on Sundays, 10:30 a.m. at the Lake Chapala Jewish Congregation, Santa Margarita 113 in Riberas del Pilar.

For the kids

Los Niños de Chapala y Ajijic has a table in front of Salvador’s Restaurant every Wednesday on market (tianguis) day. Volunteers sell handicrafts, photographic cards and special boxes of candy. They also carry autographed copies of artist Jose Duran’s 2010 calendars. To order calendars, call 766-4868.

Los Niños de Chapala y Ajijic provides tuition scholarships and other stipends for school expenses for local children.

Ancestors

The December meeting of the Ajijic Genealogy Forum will be on Monday, December 28, 2 p.m. in the Lake Chapala Society (LCS) Sala. Everyone will be asked to tell why he or she began to research his or her family history, however long ago that might have been. Each person will be asked to briefly describe the most genealogical problem facing him or her at this time. This could be “hitting a brick wall” in trying to find an individual, a technical problem or a resource question.

There will be a presentation on the use of Google Earth to enhance your knowledge of your family. Anyone interested in learning more about his or her family history is welcome to attend, whether new to genealogy or experienced.

For more information contact Fran Murphy at (376) 766-0067 or Phyl Gaskell at 766-2722.

Rock with Hope

You’ll have a chance to relive the days of the 50s, 60s and 70s by listening to songs that defined the era with the Twist, Rock and Roll and the disco beats at an event to benefit the Hope House Children’s Shelter on Wednesday, January 27, starting at 7:30 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 p.m.) at La Huerta Ajijic Ballroom, located on the Carretera Poniente 522 across from Rancho del Oro.

The event will feature a dance contest and the winners (all decked out in their finest from the era) will receive attractive prizes. Those who just aren’t up to expending that much energy will have a great time listening to a great band and watching their neighbors’ smooth moves.

Planners have arranged an art exhibit and a super raffle with more than 150 prizes and lots of time to taste Elvis Tequila and Beatles Rum.

Funds from this great event will support the Hope House home for abandoned and abused boys located in Ixtlahuacan.

Tickets are 125 pesos and are on sale at Diane Pearl Colecciones at the corner of Colon and Ocampo, Cinemas del Lago, the Wednesday tianguis and Hope House.

For further information or for a large group reservation, please contact Ana Luisa Storey at (376) 765-3015, Meme Thorpe at (376) 762-1686 or send an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

Open house

Lakeside expatriates are invited to an open house on December 23, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Hope House children’s shelter, located at Rio Lerma 4 in the Agua Escondida development of Ixtlahuacan. It’ll be a great opportunity to meet the boys who live there and to see the recent improvements made on the building. Contact Meme Thorpe at (376) 762-1686.

The Rose Bowl

American Legion Post 7, Morelos 114 in Chapala, will throw a Rose Bowl bash on New Year’s Day starting at 10 a.m. The day kicks off with a continental breakfast with egg sandwiches, baked oatmeal and fruit juice or coffee for 30 pesos (while you watch the famous parade). Game time is 2:10 p.m. and the grill, with hot dogs, hamburgers, cheese burgers, chili, sauerkraut, potato salad and beans, opens at 2 p.m. Regular Sunday grill prices will apply.
Don’t miss it. You’ll have the time (and the hamburger) of your life.
