Busy
A quick glance at this column will tell you that the “season” has arrived and Lakesiders are in the middle of a whirl of activity. Enjoy it. There’s something (actually, many somethings) for everyone. Just be careful. If you decide to drink (most do), either stay put or call a taxi to take you home. Remember to look in your rear-view mirror before throwing that SUV into reverse and play nice. We want our readers to stick around for a long time.
Fishing
The Ajijic Fishing Club will meet Friday, December 11, 10 a.m. at Dona Lola Restaurant on the Carretera in Ajijic. The club invites everyone to come and discuss fishing, fishing trips and where “they are biting.” Spouses are welcome, too. Call Ross Mitchell at (387) 761-0926.
Scholarships
The next meeting of the board of directors of Los Niños de Chapala y Ajijic (NCA) is scheduled for Tuesday, December 8, 10 a.m. at La Nueva Posada, Donato Guerra 9 in Ajijic. All those interested in the organization’s scholarship program for Mexican children are invited to attend. NCA is always on the lookout for new sponsors and volunteers. House tour
The Lakeside School for the Deaf holds its Annual Christmas Home Tour on Wednesday, December 16. Participants are asked to assemble at the Ajijic pier prior to tour departure at 5:30 p.m. Everyone will be treated to wine and snacks at the last home on the tour. Tickets are 250 pesos. The School for the Deaf provides professional education and support for deaf children and children with other special needs, thus improving their quality of life.
Toys for Tots
The Toys for Tots Golf Tournament was successfully completed on November 30 at the Chula Vista Country Club. There were 36 players and 11 “extras” for lunch.
Winners received gift certificates from Sunrise Café Restaurant, Trattoria Di Axixic, Hotel La Nueva Posada and Ruben’s Grill. Many thanks to everyone who participated in this event to help some 2,500 local kids enjoy a brighter Christmas.
Unitarians
The service for the December 13 meeting of the Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will be “UUSC-What is it?” The Fellowship meets Sundays, 10:30 a.m. at the Lake Chapala Jewish Congregation, Santa Margarita 113 in Riberas del Pilar.
Canadian Christmas
It’s Christmas party time again for the Canadian Club of Lake Chapala. The party is set for Wednesday, December 9, 5 p.m. at La Nueva Posada in Ajijic. Canadian Club members will contribute their favorite hors d’oeuvres to share. There will be lots of Christmas music in the air and a group sing-along of favorite carols. Santa Claus is scheduled for an appearance with his bag full of treats to get the Christmas spirit rolling. Everyone is welcome but there is a 50-peso charge for non-members.
The heart of it
Ajijic downtown merchants are starting a new promotional program called “The Heart of Ajijic.” The initial group of 20 businesses will participate in a Day of Celebration on Saturday, December 12 from noon to 6 p.m. The downtown will come alive with art, music, refreshments and special shopping. Don’t miss the opportunity to prepare for the holidays and enjoy a pleasant experience in an easily walkable area of a few blocks. Parking is available near the park on the lake as well as throughout the center of the village.
Baptist Christmas
The Lake Chapala Baptist Church invites all to attend their Christmas program on Saturday, December 12, 6 p.m. The local barbershop group will entertain with traditional harmonies. Boys from the Casa Hogar de Esperanza (Hope House) will sing carols in Spanish and the Baptist Church choir and ensembles will round out the night with sacred songs, including “O Holy Night,” “One Small Child,” and “Breath of Heaven,” among others.
A variety of soups and breads will be served after the program and a collection to benefit Hope House will be received. There is no charge to attend the program or to eat.

Learning seminar
The second Lake Chapala Society (LCS) Learning Seminar for the 2009/2010 season takes place on Tuesday, December 8, noon, in the Sala. Bob Miller will be the moderator and his guest speaker (a pre-recorded podcast via the Internet) will be The Right Honorable Gordon Brown, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. His subject will be “Wiring the Web for Global Good,” and the audio/visual presentation on the big screen in the LCS Sala will take about 20 minutes and will be followed by an open discussion. The talk takes a look at whether we can use today’s interconnectedness to develop shared global ethics and work together to confront the challenges of poverty, security, climate change and the economy.
The LCS Learning Seminars occur every Tuesday at noon. All LCS members are welcome to attend and join in the lively, often provocative discussion following each guest speaker’s presentation.
Dreidle, dreidle
Warm up your dreidles and get ready to enjoy fabulous potato latkes at the Lake Chapala Jewish Congregation’s annual Chanukah party, set for Sunday, December 13, 3 p.m. for fun, food, singing, games and more. Bring a dish to share with eight people. (Please, no meat, poultry or shellfish dishes). The Congregation will provide the potato pancakes, apple sauce, sour cream and soft drinks. Those who want something stronger to drink can buy wine or beer available at the cash bar.
Last year, this event was a sell-out and another is expected this year, so make your reservation early. Bring your Chanukah menorah and they will all be lighted at the same time. Or, you can purchase a menorah and candles from the Congregation gift shop.

Craft Fair
The Eighth Annual Holiday Craft Fair sponsored by the Ladies’ Auxiliary of American Legion Post 7, Morelos 114 in Chapala, will open its gates at 9 a.m. on Sunday, December 6. Besides all manner of crafts and art to make hearts light and homes decorated for the holidays, the event will feature a Quiche Lorraine brunch with fruit cup and wine for 60 pesos. Raffles will include those for a gourmet liquor basket, a kitty basket, a doggy basket and a basket of goodies from SuperLake Market. You’ll be able to take your chance on the lucky wheel or have your Tarot cards read to see what the new year will bring.
Admission is free, so come out and support the Auxiliary that, in turn, supports many local charities.
Shrine
The Lake Chapala Shrine Club had an extremely successful Dine with the Shrine on November 19 at Manix Restaurant and wishes to express a hearty thanks to the España family, especially Hector, Manuel and Oscar. Their efforts resulted in a record turnout for the dinner. The club also wants to thank the community for its continued support of these events.
The next Dine with the Shrine is planned for the end of January and will be hosted by Jorge Ancona at Hacienda’s Ajijic, The Steak Place. Watch this column for more details.
Santa’s Express
The Cruz Roja International Volunteers Chapala is sponsoring a “Santa’s Express” shopping and dining trip to the upscale Andares Mall in Guadalajara on Thursday, December 10. Travel by first class motorcoach with A/C, seatbelts, and an on-board restroom. Departure is 9 a.m. from the auditorium in La Floresta. Restaurants include Dum Thai, Palacio Restaurante, La Moresca, Sushi Factory, Outback and more. The shops include DKNY, Boss, Liverpool, Tiffany’s Stuart Weitzman and Faconnable.

Living here
The next in the series of newcomers’ seminars at the Lake Chapala Society is Living at Lakeside Part Two, Things outside of the home, on Thursday, December 10. Topics such as shopping, tipping, eating out and much more are on the agenda. Sessions begin at 10:30 a.m. and run until noon on the LCS back patio. There is no cost, no need to register and no need to be an LCS member.
Español
The Lake Chapala Society’s Spanish Program begins the next term on January 11. Registration is on Fridays from 10 a.m. to noon at LCS on the blue umbrella patio and on Monday, December 14 and Tuesday, December 15, 10 a.m. to noon on that patio. This is a seven-week term that will run through the week of February 21.
Stars
Estrella del Lago Chapter 10, Order of Eastern Star will hold its installation of officers for 2010 on Saturday, December 12, 2 p.m. at Sol y Luna, Rio Bravo 10A. The public is invited. A banquet will follow at Villa del Arte. Call 766-4510 for banquet tickets.
