February 14 is not just Valentine’s Day but also the date the city was founded.
This year, Guadalajara celebrates its 468th anniversary with a series of events in dozens of city neighborhoods. Conferences, dances and artists’ workshops are all planned. The party starts Saturday, February 6 with “A Kiss for Guadalajara,” a mass kissing event 4 p.m. in Plaza Liberacion.
February 7, noon, the National Charro Championship begins at the Lienzo Charro. Go to www.guadalajara.gob.mx and hit the “agenda ciudadana” link to see all events.
Friday February 12: Spanish evening fun with flamenco dancers and Sevilian singers in the Plaza Fundadores, behind the Teatro Degollado at 6 p.m.
Saturday February 13: Music from “Opera Vespro della Beate Vergine” by Claudio Monteverdi, with a performance by the State Ballet Company at 7:30 p.m. in the Plaza de la Liberacion, in front of the Teatro Degollado. As the night wears on, the Sagitario Orchestra takes the stage.
Sunday February 14: Come sing “Las Mañanitas” to the city with mariachi music and folk dancing, traditional games, free cups of chocolate and sweet bread in the Plaza Guadalajara, in front of the Palacio Municipal at 5 p.m. Birthday night continues with famed mariachi singer Pepe Aguilar appearing in the Plaza de la Liberacion at 8 p.m.
Monday February 15: Another performance by the State Ballet Company in the Plaza de la Liberacion at 8 p.m.
