AMSOC Posada
Fifty-four guests attended the annual posada at the American Society (Amsoc), the highlight of which was a performance by the Salvation Army (Hogar de los Niños) children’s choir. A collection basket was passed around for donations to the children’s home, and Amsoc donated 5,000 pesos to the struggling facility. This year, guests were encouraged to sing along with the choir. Roast pork and turkey sandwiches were served to the children, along with dessert and soft drinks.
Book presentation
Guadalajara resident Michael Hogan signed copies of his new book “Savage Capitalism and the Myth of Democracy” at a presentation at the American School. In a fascinating read, Hogan uses historical analysis to illustrate how the poverty, gang violence, crime and repression that haunt the streets of Latin America have evolved over two centuries.
Dialogue in the Darkness
There are only a couple of weeks left to take in the intriguing Dialogo en la Oscuridad (Dialogue in the Darkness) “exhibit” at Zapopan’s Museo Trompo Magico. Designed by German philosopher and writer Andreas Heinecke, this internationally acclaimed exhibit is described as “a unique experience in complete darkness that will awaken the senses.” Visitors are guided through totally dark passageways in which they experience remarkably realistic recorded sounds, odors and textures and feel what it is like to be blind. Most who take the tour remark on how “eye-opening” the experience is.
The Museo Trompo Magico is located at Av. Central 750, Fraccionamiento Residencial Poniente, near Periferico and Acueducto. Opening times are Tuesday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday, Sunday, and holidays 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The exhibit is closed on Mondays. For more information visit www.trompomagico.com.mx. Call (33) 3030-0001, ext. 03 for exact information of holiday opening times. English-speaking blind guides are available.
