Dear Sir,

The United States has elected Barack Obama to be our next president, a fine, capable, intelligent man.

I hope that, if his race has to be mentioned, we will stop referring to him as African-American and/or as a black man.

Mr. Obama has a black father and a white mother. He is biracial. If I were his white mother (and I wish I were), I would not like to be so often left out of the mix.

Americans of various races and from many different backgrounds elected this man. It’s an historic moment for all of us and we did ourselves proud.

Thetis Reeves, Ajijic
