Going with idea that you can never have enough cultural festivals or entertainment, Zapopan kicked off its own Festival Cultural, from October 25 through November 12, just days after Guadalajara’s Fiestas de Octubre.
All events are free, though some require advance reservations. There is music, dance, song and ritual for all tastes, with many of the events set in Zapopan’s magnificent historic downtown. Here are a few highlights of the schedule: Monday, October 27, 8 p.m. “Gulun” Russian folk dance troupe performs (Zapopan’s Plaza de las Americas, in front of the basilica) Tuesday, October 28, 8 p.m. Guadalajara’s municipal ballet folclorico dances (Zapopan’s Plaza de las Americas, in front of the basilica) Wednesday, October 29, 8 p.m. D’Jembe African percussion concert with Kanin Saka, Makemba and Rey Bemba (main plaza of Atemajac del Valle, intersection of Hidalgo and Emiliano Zapata) Thursday, October 30, 7 p.m. Bailando al Ritmo del Danzon concert and dance by Orquesta Estrellas de los 50s (just past the arches at 166 Andador 20 de noviembre in front of the Museo de Arte de Zapopan) Friday, October 31, 7 p.m. A night of Salsa, Cumbia and Son, accompanied by Mary Salinas and Cuban’s Show (just past the arches at 166 Andador 20 de noviembre in front of the Museo de Arte de Zapopan) Saturday, November 1, 8 p.m. Zarzuela (Spanish opera) “La Verbena de la Paloma” (atrium of the Zapopan basilica – tickets are free, but must be reserved by calling 3818-2200 ext. 3859) Sunday, November 2, 6 p.m. Grupo Xalisxtli performs prehispanic death rituals (Zapopan’s Plaza de las Americas, in front of the basilica) Monday, November 3, 8 p.m. Mozart’s Requiem, by Zapopan’s youth orchestra and the municipal choir (Templo Santa Rita de Casia, at the intersection of Guadalalupe and Santa Rita in Col. Chapalita) Tuesday, November 4, 8 p.m. Showing of documentary film “A portrait of Diego,” dir.
