Prodigy

Carlos Alberto, a young tenor who performed for VIVA la Musica! a few years ago when he was only 11 years old, recently sang for Placido Domingo.


The opera giant was reportedly pleased with his progress. VIVA la Musica provided Carlos Alberto, who is blind, with a scholarship to continue his studies.

Prize money

A 10,000-peso cash award awaits the winner of a regional art competition aimed at promoting the works and memory of Jose Clemente Orozco, the famed Mexican muralist who was born in Ciudad Guzman, Jalisco in 1883.

LLT
Choreographer Alexis Hoff leads auditioners for Lakeside Little Theatre’s upcoming production of “Kiss Me Kate” through their paces at the LLT season kick-off party on October 18.
All residents of southern Jalisco (including Lakeside), regardless of nationality, may enter oil paintings relating to some aspect of Orozco’s life and work.

Entries will be received at the Casa de Cultura de Ciudad Guzman, Guadalupe Victoria 22, Colonia Centro in Ciudad Guzman from November 1-14. The telephone number is (341) 412-3822.

Butterflies

Don’t forget the theatrical presentation “The Dance of the Butterflies” by Fritzia Terranza Rodriguez on Saturday, October 25, 7 p.m. at the Gonzalez Gallo Cultural Center in Chapala. Admission is free.

Book review

The second in a series of book discussions called “Sandwich In” will be held at The Gatherings Book and Coffee Shop, Ramon Corona 11, on Thursday, October 30, noon, when Larry Reeves will review and moderate the discussion on the novel “The Miracles of Santo Fico” by D.L. Smith.

The public is welcome. A special salad and sandwich is available for only 50 pesos.

Brassy

Do attend the VIVA la Musica! concert given by M5 Brass quintet from Morelia on Monday, October 27, 7:30 p.m. at Auditorio de la Ribera del Lago. Expect to hear everything from Bach to jazz and all that’s in between. These guys are really hot! Tickets are 250 pesos for VIVA members and 280 pesos for non-members. Tradition

The spectacular dance and music troupe of San Juan Cosala, “Son de Mexico” will present a special Day of the Dead program Wednesday, October 29, 6 p.m. at Auditorio de la Ribera del Lago in Ajijic. The program includes pre-Hispanic and Colonial presentations. Tickets are 100 pesos and available at the Ajijic Cultural Center and Efren Gonzalez’s art supply store, main floor, Plaza Bugambilias.
