Passion of Christ

Pasion de Cristo Axixic is sponsoring a very special event to raise money for the elaborate annual “Passion of Christ” reenactment held in Ajijic during Holy Week.

The event is a special dinner enhanced by folkloric dancers, local musical talent, lots of art, recipes for sale, delicious food to take out if you wish and a great setting, at the Garden Restaurant, Colon 8 in Ajijic on Saturday, November 8, at 4 p.m. Tickets are 150 pesos, on sale at Gallery Dos Lunas or the Garden Restaurant.

Ethnic

Viva Mexico
This photo by Maria Di Paola Blum will be part of the “Viva Mexico, Viva la Vida” exhibit with works by the photographer depicting every day life in Lakeside villages, opening November 1 at the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo.
This weekend at La Tasca, at the end of Donato Guerra in Ajijic, Maximo Alfonso will perform ethnic Mexican music with traditional pre-Hispanic instruments. Alfonso, who is a composer as well as a performer, also fabricates many of the instruments, such as the clay and bamboo flutes he uses to play the melodies. One of Alfonso’s main goals is to preserve Zapoteca, Tepehuana, and Nahuatl music. His songs are often interpreted by singer Maria Candelaria Perez. Open your ears and your hearts to new sounds and rhythms. Call 766-5269 for information and reservations.

Pre-holiday sale

Many home accessories, photographs, jewelry, paintings and crafts will be on sale October 23 to October 30 at the 60s in Paradise restaurant, Hidalgo 10 in Ajijic. Included in the items for sale are three displays by ASA members. There will be jewelry by Jose Melendrez, handmade cards by Audrey Roseman and oil paintings by Nancy Gray. There will also be an interesting assortment of Christmas items and hard-to-find wreaths.

Hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily except Sunday and Monday.

Classes

Painting classes in oil and acrylics are now being taught in the beautiful garden setting at Constitucion 14 in Ajijic. This is an open studio, where students work on their individual projects in a supportive atmosphere, instructed by a painter-teacher with more than 25 years experience.

Classes are Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information and to register contact Nancy Gray at 766-3156.

Harp

A highlight of next week’s activities will be a concert by Arpa de Chapala, a local group made up of harpist Javier Raygoza Munguia, guitarist Jose de Jesus Medeles Romero and bassist Angel Gustavo Medeles Romero. They will perform Tuesday, October 21, 7 p.m. at Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo at Avenida Gonzalez Gallo 1500 in Chapala. Admission is free.

Modern Art

Also at Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo, architect Conrado Contreras will lecture on “Modern Art” on October 23 and Fritzia Terranza Rodriguez will present a dance interpretation entitled “Dance of the Butterflies.” Both are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. All events scheduled at the center are open to the public and free of charge.

Harmony

Director Audrey Hoffnung writes that she would like to see more people joining the Lakeside Harmonizers, the mixed chorus singing Barbershop music. Rehearsals are held at the Chapala Baptist Church, Santa Margarita 147 in Riberas del Pilar, on Mondays from 11 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. Interested parties are welcome to contact Hoffnung at (387) 761-0204 for more information.

Art fair

Once again, the Feria Maestros del Arte is about to open its gates. The fair features some of Mexico’s greatest artisans, many listed in the “Great Masters of Mexican Folks Art,” and offers their work for sale with no middleman driving prices up. The Fair takes place November 7 to November 9, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Club de Yates in Chapala.

Speakers this year will be Marta Turok, known for her work with coyuchi (100 percent organic cotton) and spearheading the protection of the purpura shellfish dye; Susana Valadez, Director of the Huichol Center for Cultural Survival and Traditional Arts; and Marc Navarro, expert on vintage Mexican silver, as well as contemporary and devotional Mexican and Spanish colonial art.
