GUADALAJARA - Special prosecutors with the Mexican Defense Department (Sedena) say they are investigating who was the intended recipient of a 1.5-ton shipment of psuedoephedrine confiscated at the Guadalajara Airport on Saturday, October 4. Customs agents seized 24 boxes containing 7.2 million pills of the restricted drug used in the manufacture of methamphetamine. The shipment arrived onboard an Air France flight originating in Calcutta, India. Representatives of Sedena’s Organized Crime Unit said they have not concluded who the shipment was sent to or who sent it and declined to comment on whether the shipment’s final destination was to be Guadalajara or whether the shipment was connected to Grupo Collins, whose pharmaceutical labs were linked by U.S. officials to drug trafficking last week. No arrests have been made in the case. Three other similar shipments of pseudoephedrine, all originating in Calcutta, were discovered at the Mexico City airport last month, says Sedena. Sedena estimates that each pill of pseudoephedrine has a value of 15 pesos, putting the total value of the seized shipment around 108 million pesos. |
