Grants

A financial aid program to assist Jalisco artists in advancing their careers is now being offered by the Secretary of Culture of the State of Jalisco.

Artists and intellectuals in the state are invited to present proposed projects in the fields of plastic arts, visual arts, dance, literature, music, theater, indigenous languages literature, interdisciplinary projects and cultural history and artistic formation in Mexico and other countries.

Applications and documents may be obtained at the Gonzalez Gallo Cultural Center in Chapala, other cultural centers, at the offices of the Secretary of Culture at Avenida La Paz 875 in Guadalajara and at libraries of the state network.

Gonzalez
Ajijic artist Efren Gonzalez opened the season with an exhibition of his new work at his gallery upstairs in Plaza Bugambilias on September 28. Gonzalez’s many fans are excited about his latest work using a palette knife technique.
Applications must include proof of three years of residence in the state of Jalisco. Application is open to citizens of Mexico and other countries who meet eligibility requirements.

An orientation meeting for the program will be held Friday, October 10, 11 a.m. at the Ex-Convento del Carmen, Calle Juarez 638, Colonia Centro in Guadalajara.

Anything goes

The Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Post 7 in Chapala presents their cabaret show and dinner Wednesday and Thursday, October 22 and 23 at the Post campus, Morelos 114 in Chapala.

The menu includes Beef Burgundy, vegetables, bread and dessert.

Faith Pfeiffer is directing the show, entitled “Anything Goes,” this year. Some of those lending their talents to the festivities are Jerry Morris, Gary Voegle, Bryan Preston, Sandra Hall, Fred Isbel, Janie Harbin, Gail Parks, Wanda Bell, Peggy Graves, Julie Webb and Jon DeYoung.

Tickets cost 150 pesos for the show and the dinner. Cocktails start at 5 p.m. and dinner is served at 6 p.m. Curtain up at 7 p.m.

Get tickets early from Barbara Prince at Salvador’s Restaurant on Wednesday mornings or from Lupe at the Legion. The Cabaret is always a big hit and is a sell out. Don’t wait.

Club sala

Club Sala is planning a new fundraising entertainment event on behalf of the Lake Chapala Society’s library.

“Words and Music,” a presentation of classical music interspersed with poetry and comic verse is designed to soothe and amuse on Friday, October 17, 4:30 p.m. in the LCS back patio and gazebo.

A bar will serve beer, wine and cold drinks at modest prices. A raffle of an original painting by Carol Ann Owers will be offered and the Lakeside Consort musicians Joyce McNulty, Joyce Lawrence, Marie Framboise and Ron Napier will play chamber music and lighter pieces. Poets and authors Bill Frayer, Larry Reeves, James Tipton, Michael Warren and Liz White will read works by themselves and others.

Tickets are 75 pesos and on sale at the LCS Tickets, Etc, booth.

Looks like nice entertainment for a beautiful laid-back Ajijic afternoon.

The fling

Scottish Country Dancing beginner classes are underway at the Lake Chapala Society gazebo every Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. One need not have a partner, nor does one need to be Scottish to join the class. All you need is the willingness to have fun. For more information contact Phyl Gaskell at 766-2722.

Photography

A workshop featuring several well-known photographers from Guadalajara will be held at the Gonzalez Gallo Cultural Center in Chapala on Friday, October 17 at 7 p.m. There is no admission fee and the public is welcome.

Photo contest

Photographer Jill Flyer and the Municipality of Chapala are sponsoring a photography contest, “La Ribera de Chapala” that is open to everyone, residents and non-residents of Chapala.

Photos must be taken outdoors and of Lake Chapala or something near Lake Chapala in the municipality of Chapala.

There are categories for children, teens, university students, seniors and adult amateur and professional categories, with prizes awarded in each one.

Get your entry form and contest rules at The Department of Tourism at the west end of the malecon in Chapala, the La Puerta Gallery at Colon 13 in Ajijic, Photogenesis photo store at the south end of the Ajijic Plaza or at many other galleries and photo stores in Chapala and Ajijic.

Entries must be turned in with entry form and fees by November 19.

ASA

The Ajijic Society of the Arts (ASA) holds its regular meeting Monday, October 6, 10:30 p.m. at Hotel La Nueva Posada. After a short business meeting there will be a demonstration by painter Isabel De Blanc. ASA is a collection of local artists, foreign and Mexican, who gather each month to exchange ideas and promote art at Lakeside. All are welcome. 

Season opening

Ken Gosh will open his El Gallo gallery at Calle Guadalupe Victoria 30 for the first of his exhibitions of the fall season on Saturday and Sunday, October 11 and 12, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Gosh has had a busy summer producing lots of new paintings (at least 25) with some new techniques, his brilliant use of color, and, of course, his famous roosters.  Refreshments will be served.
