During an official visit to Mexico this week, Prince Felipe of Austurias and his wife, Leticia, made a point of stopping in Morelia with President Felipe Calderon in a show of “solidarity with Mexico” after the Independence Day attack that killed eight people.

Prince Felipe of Asturias and his wife, Leticia, were guests of honor in the Mexican Senate this week. The Spanish royals also visited Morelia, the scene of the deadly grenade attacks on September 15.
“The affection and friendship I feel [with Mexico] is such that I wish to express the deep pain we feel about the brutal and cruel terrorist attack which occurred here on September 15,” said the prince, adding that he was confident that Mexico would “emerge victorious” in its effort to combat powerful drug cartels.

The Spanish royals toured Michoacan’s capital on Monday and met with the Hijos de Morelia, descendants of 456 immigrants who fled the Spanish civil war in 1937. They then returned to Mexico City with Calderon to inaugurate a cultural conference on Iberoamerican relations.
