The new bistro and bar Drop is the latest addition to the trendy stretch of bars and restaurants that line Avenida Lopez Cotilla near Avenidas Americas. But, whereas most of the other establishments all seem to have the same look, menu and feel, Drop is refreshingly different.

Drop
The bistro/bar Drop is the latest addition to the trendy “restaurant row” on Lopez Cotilla. During weekend evenings, diners who request a table in the shallow pool (background) get a free bottle of red wine.
For starters, the main dining area doesn’t overlook the street. While there is a small terrace out front, the main restaurant is tucked away behind a simple white façade. Inside are several separate seating areas and out back there’s an open-air courtyard with a manicured lawn, garden and a shallow pool (back to that in a moment).

Drop opened about three months ago and was started by the owner of the Prego travel agency, a branch of which is located next door.  So far, the restaurant appears to be doing things right. In addition to providing a welcoming and tranquil setting, Drop trumps many of its competitors in the presentation and quality of its food. That’s due in large part to head Chef Favian Acevez, who made a name for himself working at Café Chai. Acevez is best known for his creativity and versatility, which is reflected in the menu.

One item that is particularly noteworthy is the chef’s “especialidad,” which includes a sampler platter of different meats and side dishes that’s large enough to share. For example, the “cielo, mar y tierra” special features chicken shish kebob, shrimp bathed in a creamy cheese sauce, and arrachera covered in bar-b-q sauce.  In addition, there’s a serving of spaghetti in a tangy chipotle sauce with vegetables. The selections change, so ask your waiter for the special of the day.

Besides the pleasant atmosphere and quality food, the one feature that really sets Drop apart from the rest of the pack is the shallow pool in the courtyard that accommodates several bar tables. Yes, the tables are in the pool. Diners who want to sit there need to remove their shoes, then wade through the water, which is about a foot high, to their table.  Once seated, you can let your feet dangle in the water or rest them on the lower rung of the barstool.  Your reward: a novel experience and a free bottle of house red wine. Note: the area is available for seating only on the weekends after 8 p.m.

If pool dining doesn’t float your boat, don’t worry; the restaurant also offers traditional tables and lounge seating on dry land. No matter where you end up sitting, the place is spacious enough so you won’t feel cramped. And the music is loud enough to enjoy, but not so loud that you have to shout to the person sitting next to you.  Service is generally prompt and friendly.

Drop serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, and is open most days from 8 a.m to 3 a.m.  The schedule for Sunday can vary so call ahead for exact hours. Drop is located at Lopez Cotilla 1831, between Av. Américas and Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. Tel: 3679-3636.
