There is a corner of a foreign field that will be forever Mexico — the memory of internationally-renowned Guadalajara-born painter and sculptor Juan Soriano will be honored with a sculpture garden in Owczarnia-Podkowa Lesna near Warsaw, the capital of Poland.

The whimsical sculptures of famed Mexican sculptor Juan Soriano are ready to woo a Polish audience at their new home near Warsaw.
Soriano’s partner Marek Keller recently announced the two-year effort to buy and restore the historic property in Poland to raise awareness of Soriano’s art. Although Soriano visited the terrain before his death in 2006 at the age of 85, it took Keller several years to purchase the seven-acre property, which had been devastated by World War I and abandoned for the last six decades. The project has been fully funded through the Juan Soriano Foundation, managed by Keller.

Keller restored a few of the buildings, planted pines around the property’s two lakes, cleared away and burned leaves, then carefully positioned 13 of Soriano’s most famous sculptures, shipped from Mexico City, throughout the lush forest.

Keller is also creating a non-comercial gallery museum in a restored granary, featuring photography and some smaller-scale works. The gallery will be open free of charge for all passersby and school groups and will also hosts concerts and other exhibits.

“My idea is that since Juan opened my heart to Mexico and made me love it so, I want to give him something in return: this sculpture garden in my country, Poland,” Keller told Leticia Sanchez of the Milenio newspaper group. “Juan, wherever he is now, will be pleased with this project. He loved Poland, especially Krakow, very much, and was very happy there.”

The Juan Soriano Sculpture Garden and Cultural Center is set to open in the fall. Soriano’s work is currently on exhibit in Hong Kong, the Alameda Museum in San Antonio, Texas, and a retrospective show of his work will soon be available in Oaxaca.
