Tlaquepaque’s Museo Regional de la Ceramica is hosting an event that focuses on the art of various Mexican tribes through August 24. The program entitled “Mexico Indigena en el Corazon de Jalisco” is highlighted by events each Saturday that begin at noon and feature art demonstrations, food, children’s coloring workshops, conferences and more.

Ceramica
Artisans create jewelry and other crafts at one of many stalls inside the Museo Regional de la Ceramica until August 24.
Located on the main pedestrian-only street in Tlaquepaque (Independencia 237 at the corner of Alfareros), the museum is housed in a stately old mansion with a large patio, in which about 15 stands are staffed by artists from the featured tribes who make and sell their wares on the spot. A ceramic artist using a pottery wheel was working on the first of the three weekends, which featured the cultures of the Nahua and Wixarika.

On Saturday and Sunday, August 16 and 17, the featured cultures are the Mixteco and Triqui and the following weekend, August 23 and 24, the event focuses on the Purepecha, Mazahua and Otomi tribes. The highlights of the event demonstrations, presentations, food) are scheduled for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. An auction of indigenous art including get together with the artists and a sampling of their cuisine ar also on tap for August 23, for which a definite time was not available.

The museum’s regular displays and gift shop are open during the event, and entrance is, as always, free of charge. Information: (33) 3635-5404. Hours: Tuesday to Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday 10 p.m. to 4 p.m. Closed Mondays.
