After 15 years tied to Guadalajara, the International Mariachi Festival is on the move.  The city will still host the annual fall extravaganza – this year’s dates are August 28 to September 7 – but

organizers hope to extend the event to the United States in November and Spain in January 2009. Although details are sketchy, the plan is to take dozens of mariachi musicians to U.S. and Spanish cities for mini festivals.

This year’s festival will feature the usual ingredients: nightly galas at the Degollado Theater; free concerts in public plazas, shopping malls and restaurants, as well as many other mariachi related events.  A big draw is bound to be the concert at the Auditorio Telmex on September 5 given by Juan Gabriel, one of Mexico’s most famous ranchero singers.

The festival parade in downtown Guadalajara (Saturday, August 30, 4 p.m.) will feature 16 floats and hundreds of musicians, dancers and charros (Mexican horsemen and women).
