Bike paths are great, but what about basic infrastructure? Print E-mail

Dear Sir,

Isn’t the vision of a network of Portland-like bicycle paths in Guadalajara wonderful?
What great family outings all the well-to-do moms and dads can enjoy with the kids!

But how many people are going to go to work on them? Where are the paths to go? Not to mention the bicycles when cyclists are not cycling?

Pedestrians already have enough trouble threading their way among parked cars on Rocky Mountain surfaces that would make mountain goats blanch. When we’re not “marathoning” our way along sidewalk facsimiles we are standing almost in Indy-500 traffic on treacherous street corners trying to flag down rattletrap buses. If the bus driver deigns to come to a shuddering halt a quarter of a block away by a pothole, we thank our lucky stars and lurch our way to a seat to have our kidneys bashed and bruised as the shockingly un-shocked bus pounds its route along hectic and often too narrow streets.

Don’t get me wrong. Biking is great exercise and builds moral character. It also is a great sport.

But as long as we’re talking about improving transportation – what about the metro?

The existing one and a half lines are great but what happened to the rest of them? Why not at least make a plan for a metro network? Why not try to add at least one line by 2011? Is a bicycle network really so much more important than extending the basic infrastructure of the city’s transportation system?
