Dear Sir,

All the Hispanics in Toledo, Ohio were waiting to watch Lorena Ochoa – the number one golfer in the world – play in the Farr Owen Corning Classic.
But she paid a fine of 25,000 not to play. What’s up with that?
Manuel Ortiz

Guadalajara’s Lorena Ochoa preferred to pay the fine rather than adhere to the LPGA’s “1-in-4” participation rule that requires golfers to play each stop on tour at least once in a four-year cycle. The LPGA believes the rule is important to protect the quality of fields. Although Ochoa has not explained her decision to miss the Corning Classic for the past four years, she has endured some deaths in the family of late. This may be a partial reason.
