Owners and operators of older-model trucks and buses belonging to the national transport union wreaked traffic havoc on the Guadalajara-Chapala highway this week. The blockade was part of an ongoing protest against new legislation that may leave them stranded.

Hundreds of aging behemoths paraded along the highway between the periferico and the airport, slowing traffic to about 20 km/hour and commandeering all but one lane of the busy road until mid-afternoon on Wednesday.

Federal laws stipulate that trucks and buses older than 1989 will no longer be issued valid license plates or allowed onto federal highways, as part of a dechatarrizacion plan obliging transport operators to replace all vehicles in poor condition or lacking safety features for passengers.

Owners and drivers say they cannot afford to replace their vehicles, and vow to take their mobile blockade to Mexico City if necessary. Authorities have so far stood firm, agreeing only to extend the deadline for compliance until next month.

Several of the trucks and buses involved in the protest were unable to complete the full route as a result of overheating and other mechanical problems.
