Dear Sir,

Headlines announce that Mexican drug-related murders are up by nearly 50 percent this year compared with last year.

That’s pretty scary. But let’s look at some statistics. Drug-related deaths in Mexico to date (January-April 2008) are 1,378. Annualized, that figure would be 4,134. The total number of murders in Mexico is 13,829.

It’s useful to examine these stats as murders per 100,000 of population. Drug-related murders in 2008: 4. Total murders: 14.

Let’s compare these figures to some U.S. cities (murders per 100,000 population in 2006). Detroit: 47; New Orleans: 38; Orlando: 27; Kansas City: 25; Chicago: 16.

Where are the warnings not to visit New Orleans, or even Orlando?
