Dear Sir,

I am a regular reader of the Guadalajara Reporter. I have never written a letter to the editor but I feel I must express my thoughts about the anger that has been directed toward Jeanne Chaussee and her article describing the unpleasant experience she had with someone who acted with a Nazi-like attitude regarding keeping “her” street clean.

I understand her use of the term Nazi to be an adjective, describing offensive and threatening behavior. Perhaps she could have used another equally descriptive word – fascist, perhaps, and not offended some.

I do not know Ms. Chaussee, nor do I know the person she is speaking about, as she did not identify him. I can understand that Chapala-Ajijic would like to have a pristine city-area, but I think this desire would be better achieved with civil conversations, respectful education, equitable application, etcetera, instead of threats.

I just wonder what would happen if you had cleaned your sidewalk at 7 a.m. and by 11 a.m., the “Limpio-Militia” person arrived to inspect the area and found not only leaves and flowers on the sidewalk, but also a few food wrappers left behind by passing adults and children and dog waste left by animals running free or owners who do not feel the responsibility to pick up after their pets. Would you then need to have an armed guard in front of your property to prevent this from happening and possibly receiving a lecture, threats and/or a summons by the cleanup police person?

Ajijic is lovely, some envision it to be Camelot, but it is certainly not a police state.

Jacqueline Ellen
