As the sun lowers behind the imposing Entrance Arch of Zapopan on Tuesday, April 29, an audience seated in 400 chairs will be treated to two hours of performances observing El Dia Internacional de la Danza.

Day of dance
Free performance will mark the International Day of Dance.
“We have 276 dancers involved,” said Raul Robles of Zapopan’s cultural promotion organization. “Many types of dance are represented. There will be four folkloric groups, prehispanic dancers, flamenco dancers from UNIVA university, classical ballet, modern dance, and three Polynesian groups.

“One of my favorites will be Danza Prehispanica Xalistli,” Robles said. “They’re associated with the Instituto de Investigacion Antropologia and their leader Dr. Patricia Torres just returned from China where she was offering education about prehispanic culture.”

The municipality is hosting the 14 dance groups as part of a statewide effort. Robles adds that all the dance groups are on a professional level, including the three associated with dance schools and institutes, one of which is Xalistli.

The event is set for 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and is free. Zapopan’s Arco de Ingreso is at the intersection of Avenida Avila Camacho and Americas, about eight blocks east of Zapopan’s famed basilica.
