The Navy League Council of Puerto Vallarta arranged yet another community relations project when the CGC Midgett came into port recently. Around 30 crew members from the Midgett volunteered their time and muscle at the Casa Hogar. As well as cleaning around the orphanage and an adjacent lot, the crew brought with them coloring books, crayons, books and a soccer ball. When the work was done, there was time for the sailors to play an impromptu game of soccer with some of the children. The ship’s name honors the late Chief Warrant Officer John Allen Midgett Jr, who was awarded the Gold Lifesaving Medal for leading a rescue crew that saved 36 men from the torpedoed British ship Mirlo in 1918. What is just as remarkable is the fact that seven members of the CGC Midget havealso received the same high award and more than 150 members of John Allen Midgett’s family have made the Coast Guard a career. |
