Mezcal Keeps Worm After All |

The mezcal industry has saved the worm. Authorities tried to ban the liquor's trademark gusano last month, saying the worm's fat content altered the chemical composition of this traditional Mexican firewater. But Mezcal producers convinced the government the worm poses no risks to imbibers, who, if they get as far as the worm, have a lot more to worry about the next morning than a few fat globules. Saving the worm might have saved the industry. One New York importer of mezcal says the worm is what sells the bottle and estimated a 70 percent drop in sales if it had been banned. |
