UNESCO last week decided not to designate Mexico's cuisine as "a Masterpiece of the Intangible Heritage of Humaity."
Jurors selected 43 proposals out of 75 applications from 65 countries but found the focus of Mexico's candidacy too difficult to interpret. Mexican was seeking "Intangible Heritage" status for its cuisine on the basis of this country's use of corn in its diet, a tradition stemming back some 7,000 years. Mexican government officials promised to submit another application next year. |
