Forbes Few places in the Guadalajara area serve lecheros, with the possible exception of Robys, a growing chain of eateries in the southern part of Zapopan and Tlajomulco that recently opened an express outlet on Lopez Mateos Sur near Santa Anita. Besides lecheros, Robys aims to offer something other than coffee (although it makes 30 coffee-inspired beverages). It also serves imported beer and wine along with soft-drinks and non-carbonated beverages only found north of the border. "You need to have more than coffee," said Jonathan Rey Hasson, manager of the new outlet. "People in Guadalajara want both coffee and food." Robys opened its newest outlet earlier this month in Tlajomulco, due to the suburb's rapid growth. It follows the chain's two successful full-service locations in the Las Palmas and La Calma neighborhoods of Guadalajara. "The growth in the south part of the city is just crazy," said Roberto Solis Carpenter, the founder of Robys, explaining his motivation for putting a "cluster" of restaurants there. Additionally, Guadalajara has few good breakfast places, he said. Robys opens at 6 a.m., ideal for commuters and people heading to the airport to grab a quick breakfast (namely: eggs, chilaquiles, molletes, waffles and pancakes, along with coffees and smoothies). A small variety of lunches and dinners are also served, ranging from Mexican standbys like enchiladas to Asian stir-fries. Customers dine in a spacious storefront decorated with natural wood and country-theme art. Comfy chairs for lounging are also available. |
