Restaurants in Mexico often provide gut-busting portions of food for extremely cheap prices. The quality, though, frequently leaves something to be desired and one often leaves such establishments feeling like his gluttony might have taken years off his life. Most of the region's Chinese restaurants follow such a feedbag approach, loading up buffets with heavy fare of dubious quality and selling the meals for ridiculously low sums. Jocotepec, Jalisco
In the midst of such mediocrity - to use a kind word - the China Inn Joco, an unassuming spot on the main drag through Jocotepec, surpasses all expectations, serving tasty and fairly authentic Cantonese dishes for rock-bottom prices. And despite being inexpensive, the kitchen cuts absolutely no corners. (The owner, who learned his cooking skills in Los Angeles, shows off his thriftiness with the Spartan décor, which is tasteful and refreshingly not garish or tacky.)
We went to China Inn Joco with high expectations, having heard friends rave about the food and prices - and they were right. Appetizers, ranging from spring rolls to pot stickers, are 20 to 30 pesos. Traditional favorites like chop suey, orange chicken and sweet and sour pork go for 40 pesos per plate. Shrimp dishes are 50 pesos. Beer is only 10 pesos a bottle and Sake is also available for 20 pesos.
We started with egg rolls and shrimp and vegetable tempura. Both were excellent and done just right. The batter was light and crisp on the tempura and the egg rolls were crunchy inside and out. For main dishes, we tried beef and broccoli and spicy Kung Pao chicken. Again, both were top rate and the portion sizes were jaw dropping. Other dining companions enjoyed spicy shrimp, which while not an entirely authentic Cantonese dish, was both tasty and good value for the money.
All told, we spent a mere 200 pesos for three appetizers, two main dishes and five beers. The service was prompt and attentive and warranted a generous tip. Although we left full, there wasn't that regretful feeling after loading up at a cheap buffet. Who knew the best-tasting and best-priced Chinese food we've found so far would be in Jocotepec?
