Forbes Discerning diners will soon get the chance to savor fine Chinese cuisine in surroundings that might well induce a far eastern prince to drop his jaw. Over the past few weeks, truckloads of colorful, eye-catching decorations and furniture have been flowing into the city's Ciudad del Sol neighborhood, as an elegant new Chinese restaurant takes form on Av. Tizoc. Says Dong Mei Jin, general manager and part owner of the Huayang International Restaurant: "There is nowhere else like this in Mexico. We want to show Mexicans what original Chinese cuisine and service is like." The experience won't come cheaply, of course. Mei Jin and her partners are investing 1.5 million dollars in the plush 400-seat restaurant. Meals will probably run to 200-500 pesos per person but that may be a small price to pay for what promises to be a comprehensive five-senses experience. Service will be traditional, says Mei Jin. The waiters and waitresses will be trained to exacting Chinese standards and wear uniforms brought in from China. It is easy to see where most of the money is being spent. The arch on the restaurant's exterior is a replica of the one at the Temple of Heaven located in southeast Beijing. Many of the interior adornments echo details in the Imperial Gardens of the Summer Palace. A dozen private rooms in the 1,300-square-meters restaurant are to be set aside for secluded dining and special events. The food will be of gourmet quality, vows Mei Jin, who is bringing in a chef from China – apparently an expert in tofu preparation and traditional soups. The restaurant will also offer a Cantonese breakfast and Chinese beer, says Mei Jin. If successful, the partners plan to open a second restaurant in Puerto Vallarta, before expanding throughout Mexico. The restaurant, a few blocks from Plaza del Sol, is expected to open next month. |
