The classic holiday libation is ponche navideño, a heart-warming Christmas punch made with native fruits and spices vaguely akin to mulled wine. A staple at posadas and Christmas Eve feasts, it is usually concocted in huge vats according to a favorite family recipe. Stewing together key ingredients – tejocotes (hawthorn fruits), guavas, prunes, jamaica flowers, bits of sugar cane, cinnamon sticks, pecans and sugar – renders a delectable, steaming brew that is traditionally served up in clay mugs. Youngsters swill down their ponche as is, while grown-ups often elect to lace theirs with a shot of tequila or brandy. |
