On the streets of Beijing, the smell of carne asada and gringas pours onto the street from the first Mexican-owned restaurant chain to open its doors in China. El Fogoncito, an international food chain, is hoping to introduce a rare treat to the Chinese: the street food of Mexico.
Until now, Mexican cuisine has been poorly represented in China by U.S. fast food chains offering "Tex-mex" fare. "The Americans won the battle. They used our ideas their way. So now it is time to wake up," said Efe Ari Kahan, vice president of the chain. El Fogoncito, which opened in 1968 and has branches throughout Central America, hopes to expand their hold in China to thirty branches in three years. "We need a successful operation to be an example, so that other Mexican businesses will come to China," said Mexican ambassador to China, Sergio Ley Lopez. |
