Airport Restaurant Worth A Stopover Print E-mail

The next time you're at the Miguel Hildalgo Airport and you've got time to kill and pesos to spare, you might want to check out La Pausa, located on the second floor just above the international arrivals area. The service may not be the best, but the food is satisfying. I tried out this white tablecloth restaurant with a friend who was passing through the airport on a two-hour layover. This friend, Sophie, also happens to be a daughter of an accomplished French chef with an incredible sense for culinary detail.
We got a table on the edge of the restaurant with a great view of the international arrivals. If we would have been waiting for someone we could have raised a glass to them as they cleared customs. However, the ambiance was somewhat tainted by an annoying loop of sports highlights from a big screen television in the bar.
The service is anything but world class, but you have to give them credit for trying. We had at least three different servers and somehow got two orders of the main course instead of the one we wanted to share. I could see Sophie cringe as one of the waiters fumbled her flatware and left the fork sticking out at an angle from underneath her plate. The butter that was served with the bread was still practically frozen.
When the food finally arrived we were satisfied. We ordered a raw salmon appetizer (78 pesos), which was fresh and tart with the addition of capers and cream. The involtini de pollo (111 pesos) consisted of a light pesto pasta and four chicken medallions stuffed with spinach and shrimp.
The restaurant offers wines from Mexico, Argentina and Germany, but don't get your heart set on anything particular. After deciding upon the Santa Silvia Malbec, a dark red from Argentina, we were informed it was out of stock. We instead opted for the Blue Rhine (75 pesos a glass). It was not quite as sweet as a Riesling, but complemented the chicken nicely.
So what was the final verdict? As a hungry layperson I was satisfied, but what about Sophie?
"They're lucky I'm not writing this review," she said.
If you're not in the mood for high brow fair, the airport has several other options including Chili's, Wings, Burger King, Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks, a few sandwich shops and several other regional eateries.
